German-Dutch diarist whose The Diary of a Young Girl, written while hiding from the Nazis in an Amsterdam annex, became one of the most widely read books of the twentieth century. Her vivid, intelligent, and deeply human voice makes the Holocaust personal. She died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 15.
