Biography

English writer, philologist, and Oxford professor who created modern fantasy literature with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His invented languages, mythologies, and the world of Middle-earth represent one of the most elaborate acts of literary creation in history. A close friend of C.S. Lewis, he was also a distinguished scholar of Old English and medieval literature.
